Spunky
GCH Elkhrn Mtn's Southpaw I Cross My Heart TKN
Spunky is out of my first litter. She was my light blue collar puppy and I have to admit, I think she chose me.
She was a spunky (now you know how she got her name), outgoing pup who never let anything stop her. She was the best problem solver out of the litter and unlike her mother (Tipsy), if she got tangled up in the lead she'd stop, fix herself, and continue on her way. Tipsy would just sit there till you did it for her (but I still love her).
The other nice thing about her is that she'll work for just about anyone. She loves everyone, but she LOVES children the most, and therefore loves playing "Show Dog" with a friend's daughter (pictured below).
Spunky debuted in the world of dogs in the Montana Brittany Club's annual field trial in August of 2016 at the age of six months. She had never been in a field that big before, nor had she been on birds really, but I entered her to have fun, and we both did, even though she decided to go do her own thing and lose me. However, losing me for that ten minutes solved one problem, her running off and not checking back in!
The week after that she entered the field for her first bird season. She had no bird work but because of her losing me at the field trial the week before she now checked in to see where I was periodically, completely self taught. To this day I've never had an issue with her running off or getting lost.
She's also nice because when she does wander off all I have to do is blow my whistle and if I keep blowing and calling, no matter where she is she'll find me. This happened later in the season while pheasant hunting, she got lost in some thick brush and I couldn't see her. But I kept walking, kept hunting, whistling occasionally and about five minutes later she ran up behind me, jumped up for her "good girl!" and pat, then went right back to hunting.
I will never regret whistle training this girl, and because of how nice it is whistle training will be something I do with all of my pups in the future, as well as starting to whistle train pups that go to new families.
She debuted her show career in Helena Montana, September 2016 and then again in Boise, Idaho in October. No points yet, but she was just a puppy who I really just wanted to have fun.
This girl debut'd her Agility career in March at a local NADAC trial where she ran in Intro Regular, Tunnelers and a run of Jumpers. No qualifying runs were to be had but she had very nice Tunnelers work compared to the rest of her runs.
We will keep practicing in this venue over the summer and trial again in the fall.
Spunky earned her first points in May 2017 in Spokane Washington, then her first major in Helena Montana that same year.
Our first show of the 2018 season was in Lewiston Idaho, where on the first day she not only took Winners Bitch for a four point major, but went on to take Best of Breed over Tipsy and another bitch special to turn that four point major into a five point major, earning her last five points in style under Judge Guy Jeavons to earn her Champion title out of the Bred By Exhibitor class.
Spunky hit the Juniors ring with Mac in 2018 and started her serious career as a Special (finished Champion) in 2019!
